The Age of Man
The Devotees of the Hour
As a sign of commitment and sacrifice, six powerful families in Ashera pledge two children of each generation to the work of the gods and the empire. These children are usually among the best and brightest of their class, and they enter the service of the church for their families’ chosen patron god. Once they have entered the church, they cut all political and financial ties with their family and devote themselves to a life of service.
The Devotees run a single grand temple near the heart of the city, which turns its focus to each god in turn, at their appointed hour. They also provide a substantial amount of assistance in the coordination of religious activities, especially those that involve multiple churches, both in the city of Ashera and the empire at large.
